Who Chooses a Huawei over an HTC? The Huawei Ascend P1 S vs. The HTC Desire X

Huawei doesn’t rank highly on most people’s list of mobile phone manufacturers. When we think of phone makers we think of Apple, Samsung, Nokia and HTC. However, Huawei may be a late starter in the phone market, but they’re rapidly catching up to other brand names. The company specialises in producing feature laden but affordable smart devices, and they are doing pretty well at it. HTC, on the other hand, is famous for producing great Android devices, but they come at a price. Is it really worth going for a cheaper model? We took the Huawei Ascend P1 S and put it to the test against the HTC Desire X to see how they compared. They’re both 3.5G devices running Android’s 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, though the HTC tends to come in more expensive than the Huawei with most service providers. Which one came out on top? Well, one of these phones is a definite bargain…

What the Huawei Ascend P1 S Offers You…

Firstly, the Huawei is the more powerful device. It runs a 1500 MHz processor as compared to a 1000 MHz processor on the HTC, making it snappier and more responsive. It also has thirty per cent more RAM, which helps with responsiveness but also makes the phone better at multi-tasking and running more than one process simultaneously. The screen is also bigger on the Ascend, coming in at 4.3 inches rather than the four inch screen on the Desire. Not only that, but the display has thirty per cent higher resolution and ten per cent more PPI (pixels per inch)’ this results in a screen that’s brighter, more colourful and better defined than that of the Desire. The in-built camera is an 8 MP device, as compared to the 5 MP camera on the HTC, which means better quality photos with more fine detail. It also shoots full HD video. Finally, despite having the bigger screen, the Ascend still comes in around thirty per cent thinner and twenty per cent generally smaller than the HTC.

What the HTC Desire X Offers You…

The Desire X does have a couple of benefits. First off it gets faster maximum data speeds, meaning quicker downloads and faster opening of web pages. It also runs a newer version of the Bluetooth software, coming equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 rather than the 3.0 on the Ascend. If you’re a frequent user of Bluetooth devices the newer software means faster data transfer and that your phone uses less battery power to connect to said devices. Not a bad thing if you’re using a lot of hands free in the car, for example. Finally, the Desire comes in around ten per cent lighter than the Ascend.

Which Should I Choose?

Whilst the Desire does have a couple of benefits, they don’t really outweigh the force of the Huawei Ascend P1 S. The Ascend is just the better phone, with more features and more power, not to mention better screen quality. We recommend the Huawei over the HTC. And you get to save a little money too…
