Fight of the Grandfathers – The Nokia Lumia 820 vs. The Motorola Motosmart

Motorola and Nokia are probably the grandfathers of the mobile phone. They’re both companies with long histories in the cell phone business. However, with the advent of the smart phone, Motorola and Nokia don’t exactly seem to have much to offer any more. Motorola haven’t done’ anything great since the flip phone, and Nokia seem to be spending all their energies on their Windows phones, which haven’t been terribly successful. With companies like Apple and Samsung becoming the market leaders, do Motorola and Nokia have anything to offer any more? We decided to compare a couple of their models to see what we could find. We took the Nokia Lumia 820, a Windows phone, and pitted it against the Motorola Motosmart, an Android phone, to see how they compared. Surprisingly, they both turned out to be pretty decent devices, not a Samsung Galaxy, but still, functional and affordable. But which one came out on top? Read on to find out…

Why You Should Buy the Nokia Lumia 820…

There were a few things we liked about the Nokia. Firstly, it is faster. It comes with double the RAM of the Motorola, making it just that much more responsive and better able to multi-task. The screen quality is also much higher than the Motorola’s. The screen is larger, coming in at 4.3 inches as compared to 3.5 inches on the Motosmart. But the display also has two and a half times higher resolution, as well as thirty per cent more PPI (pixels per inch), making it noticeably brighter and crisper than the Motorola’s display. The camera is superior, coming with 8 MP rather than just 3 MP on the Motorola, meaning you get better quality and more highly detailed pictures. Finally, there is a huge difference. The Lumia comes with 8 GB of internal storage, the Motorola with a mere 168 MB. We have no idea why Motorola thought that a smart phone could function with such a small amount of memory, but they did. For you this means an awful lot more music, photos and games on your phone. The Nokia did us proud, despite being a Windows phone rather than an Android…

Why You Should Think About the Motorola Motosmart…

The things we liked about the Motorola mostly had to do with the fact that it was an Android phone. You’re connected to Android’s App Market, which means that finding, downloading and installing new programmes and games is a breeze. Also, the Motorola can run multiple applications at the same time, allowing you to browse the internet whilst talking on Skype, for example. The Windows phone can’t handle this. Overall, the Motorola also came in thirty per cent lighter, which isn’t too surprising given the larger screen on the Nokia.

Our Recommendation…

These really aren’t bad devices at all. But in the end, our recommendation goes with the Nokia Lumia 820. It was simply a more powerful phone with a better screen and an awful lot more memory. But maybe Nokia and Motorola do still have something to offer. They might not make top class devices any more, but they do make affordable and dependable ones…

Phil Turner has learned to compare mobile phones two at a time, to discard one and then compare the winner with the next phone on his list.
