Reasons Why Mobile Phone Use Can Be A Danger To Your Safety And The Solutions
These days, no matter where you go, you’re bound to find just about everyone using his or her mobile phone. Whether you glance over at the car next to you at a stop light to find the driver quickly glancing at her phone or you find students talking on their phones on their way out of school every day, our society has become very reliant upon these devices, so we bring them wherever we go and we use them every chance we get.
Despite the many ways that mobile phones can help us, such as giving us the ability to call for help right away when an emergency occurs, no matter where we are, or helping us find directions if we are lost in a strange place, there are also many ways in which mobile devices actually hinder our safety. Below are just some ways that mobile phone use can put us into dangerous situations.
Pedestrians Putting Themselves at Risk
Pedestrians, especially those in large, busy cities, have made it a habit of walking and talking on their mobile devices or, worse yet, walking and looking down at their phones to check text messages, websites, emails, etc. Businesspeople and tourists alike are guilty. But when you have your head down, you aren’t aware of your surroundings, and this puts you in great danger.
There have been many instances of pedestrians being hit by vehicles as they were crossing the street because they were too distracted by their mobile phones. And there are also crimes committed against people who are distracted by their devices while they are walking in any city, large or small. These pedestrians make themselves vulnerable to criminals who can more easily stalk them without their knowledge and who can then proceed to try to steal from them.
Drivers Putting Themselves at Risk
Many drivers have gotten themselves into major car accidents because they were too distracted by their mobile devices. Though hands-free devices can help to keep a driver’s focus on the road where it belongs, many people believe that even these devices do not solve the problem completely because having a conversation while driving, especially a frustrating or angry conversation, can distract people just as much as a text message can.
When drivers take their eyes off of the road for even just a second or two, a lot can happen, such as a pedestrian or animal stepping out into the street or a car running a red light or stop sign and driving in front of their path. If these drivers do not react quickly enough—and they cannot if they are too busy checking their phones or trying to grab a phone that has fallen between the seats or onto the floor—major accidents, injuries, and death can occur.
The solutions to these dangers are simple: people need to always be aware of their surroundings, whether walking or driving, and they should keep their mobile phone use to a minimum while in these potentially dangerous situations.
